Stanley Walter Los, 87, of Willard Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts died Thursday, November 13th at home. He was the husband of Helen Cholewa Los.
Born on October 26, 1916 in Fall River, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Wojciech Los, who was born in Staszkowka, Poland in 1884, and the late Aniela Szczygiel, who was born in Niendowski, Poland.
Mr. Los was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, He was employed by Alden Corrugated Container Corporation for 45 years and was Plant Superintendent. Mr. Los was a former member of Ward 6 Democratic City Committee, former President of Alden Employees Federal Credit Union for 28 years and was former Recording Secretary, Distric I Polish National Alliance for 28 years. He was also President of the Polish American United Organization of New Bedford for 11 years, and was Secretary of the Friends of Poland, Inc. for 23 years.
At the time of his death, Mr. Los was President of the Woodrow Wilson Club for 44 years, Lodge 1667, Polich National Alliance, Delegate to Council 81, Polish National Alliance for 44 years, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dennison Memorial Community Center for 24 years, and was a Life member of the Loyal Order of Elks, No. 73, New Bedford. He also was a member of Hazelwood Bowling Club, St. James Seniors' Club, St. Hedwig Senionrs' Club and was a prishener of St. Hedwigs' Church.
Mr. Los was recognized in many ways for his volunteer work. In 1986 he was the Polish American of the Year for District I Polish National Alliance. In honor of his loyalty, dedication and service to the Polish Community, Mr. Los was awarded the Man of the Year in 1988 by the Polish United Societies of Greater New Bedford. As a token of their appreciation in 2001, the Dennison Memorial Community Center dedicated a computer room in his honor.
Stanley Los married Helen Cholewa on April 19, 1941 at Holy Cross Church in Fall River, Massachusetts. They were married 62 years.
Mr. Los enjoyed traveling, reading, card playing, gardening and carpenty. He was also an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.
His deceased brothers were Matthew Los, Joseph Los, Walter Los, and Paul Los, all of Fall River, Massachusetts. Mr. Los's late sisters were Helena Los, of Fall River, Anna Lemieux of New Bedford, and Tessie Antos of Providence.
Survivors include his wife Helen Los, two sons, Kenneth S. Los of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Paul Los, of Falls Church, VA, a daughter, Kathleen Los Waldron of New Bedford; two sisters, Sue Richards and Lillian Robinson, both of Pennsylvania. Mr. Los had 7 grandchildren, Paul Los, Jr., Robert Los, Mark Los, Laurie Los, Michael Waldron, Thomas Waldron and sara Waldron; 3 great-grandchildren, Roger DaSilva, Christopher Los and Katrina Los.
