Rita P. Cogan, a longtime resident of Woburn passed away peacefully on July 13th at the Woburn Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. She was 91 years of age. Mrs. Cogan was the beloved wife of the late Paul L. Cogan. Born in Boston she was the daughter of the late Paul and Ann (Melody) Bergin.
Mrs. Cogan was raised and educated in Roxbury and was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School. She worked as a secretary for many years with the J.H. Winn Inc. (Winn - McCord Co.) of Winchester prior to her retirement. Mrs. Cogan raised her family in East Woburn where she was a very active parishioner of St. Joseph Church. She volunteered there as a Sunday School Teacher and also volunteered with organizing the church bazaar and was a member of the St. Joseph Women’s Club. In her leisure time she enjoyed baking, crocheting, sewing and playing bingo.
In addition to her late husband and parents, Mrs. Cogan is predeceased by her siblings, Sr. Mary Joseph Calasanctia SND, May Pariselli, Helen, Paul, James, and Joseph Bergin. She is survived by her loving daughters and their spouses, Rita Masotta and her husband John of Woburn, Maureen Lynch and her husband Edward of Burlington, Karen Hriniak and her husband Walter of No. Andover, Geraldine Hurney and her husband Michael of Woburn. She is also survived by seven loving grandchildren, eleven loving great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 100 Washington St., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Rita's memory to the Alzheimer's Assoc., 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
