Antone Mendes, 85, of New Bedford died Monday July 5, 2010 at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Josephine (Souza) Mendes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jose and Anuciacao (Ferreira) Mendes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Mendes was the former President and co-owner of the family business, Manhattan Bottling Company.
He was a Past President of the New England Bottlers Association. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Tony will be remembered by many for his kind heart and thoughtful gestures.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine; a son, William A. Mendes and his wife Dawn of Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Ceasar Mendes, Victor Mendes, and Celeste Arruda.
A private memorial service was held on Friday morning at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors followed in Pine Grove Cemetery.
