John D. Calhoun, 85, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Coliseum Hospital in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Rev. Robert Chaudoin and Rev. John K. Mobley, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Calhoun was born February 23, 1925 in Dooly County, Georgia to the late Paschal Marvin and Penny Mae Hobbs Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun attended school in Dooly County and served in the U.S. Army and the 11th Airborne Division during World War II. His service took him to the Pacific theater and Okinawa, Japan. A lifelong farmer, Mr. Calhoun was a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was also a member and deacon of New Prospect Baptist Church where he served as a former Sunday school teacher and for many years, Sunday school superintendent.
Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife of 59 years: Marcia L. Calhoun; daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy & Tim Woods, Cherry & David Carter, and Debby & Ricky Reynolds, all of Fitzgerald; six grandchildren: Cherilyn Oliver of Lakeland, Casey Carter of Fitzgerald, Dede Bennett of Lakeland, Benji Giddens, Caleb Carter, and Mandy Giddens, all of Fitzgerald; ten great-grandchildren; one sister: Geneva Griffin of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister-in-law: Jackie Calhoun of Jacksonville, FL. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
