Rye, NH – Vera E. (Hulub) DeFrates 88, of Seabrook Beach and formerly of Methuen, Mass. died on Sunday June 27, 2010 at Webster at Rye Retirement Center.
Born and educated in North Andover, Mass. she was the daughter of Paul and Katherine (Koslutza) Hulub, and was a graduate of North Andover High School. Vera was a golf enthusiast, who enjoyed playing rounds of golf, entering many tournaments, winning longest drive contests and being named club champion numerous times.
In 1958, she rewrote the record book at Merrimack Valley Golf Club by holing a No. 5 iron shot for an eagle three on the 475-yard first hole. The feat had never before been accomplished by a woman.
Summers Mrs. DeFrates enjoyed riding in her convertible, sitting at the beach with her friends, and always loved throwing a good party at her summer home.
In 1980, she moved with her late husband Francis T. DeFrates of more than 50 years from Methuen to Seabrook Beach where together they enjoyed their life. Mrs. DeFrates was a fabulous cook, making the best apple pies, even winning a pie contest in Hampton, NH a few years ago. Her Thanksgiving dinners were always spectacular and included her secret stuffing, just-right whipped potatoes and homemade cranberry sauce. She loved a difficult crossword puzzle, Jeopardy, Scrabble and a mean game of cribbage. Mrs. DeFrates was a member of the Methuen Women’s Civic Club, the Seabrook Beach Association, and the Seabrook Beach Women’s Club.
Mrs. DeFrates spent her last four and a half years at the Partridge House in Hampton, NH. It was here, where she and her new friends started the Partridge House “Supper Club”. For some it was a cocktail hour with homemade food dishes, but for all who joined it was hours of conversation in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.
The widow of Francis T. DeFrates Vera was the mother of the late Francis T. DeFrates II. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Olga Jean (Hulub) LaFrance and Mary (Hulub) Kelly. She leaves behind her brother Paul Hulub and his wife Teddy of Tonawanda, NY and a number of nieces and nephews.
