Ledyard - Thurman M. Hildebrand, 92, of Ledyard, passed away quietly at The William W. Backus Hospital, Friday, June 18, 2010, after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.
Thurman was born in Norwich on Oct. 1, 1917, to Arthur W. Hildebrand and Eva Maynard Hildebrand. He attended the Bishop Elementary School in Norwich and left school to help support his family during the Great Depression. On Sept. 10, 1941, he married Ethel Maynard, his loving wife of 68 years who survives him. He worked as a crane operator for the Stone and Webster Engineering Company and later at the Electric Boat Company and the U.S. Submarine Base as a crane operator. After leaving there he became an independent roofing and siding contractor for Sears and Roebuck and continued in his own business for many years. He was known to all as a man who worked hard and many depended on him for his fine quality workmanship.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Thurman A. Hildebrand of Ledyard and Mark S. Hildebrand of Belmont, Vt. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Maynard of Ledyard, his brother, Arthur Hildebrand of Norwich, as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his middle son, Edward Ronald Hildebrand of Ledyard.
There will be calling hours from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at the Avery Stoddard Cemetery in Ledyard.
