Lawrence E. Schillberg, 87, of Mansfield passed away on Saturday June 26, 2010 at the Oak Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pawtucket, RI. He was the beloved husband for the past 65 years of Alice K. (Hansen) Schillberg.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 28, 1922 he was a son of the late Lawrence E. and Katherine (Brennan) Schillberg.
Larry grew up in Brooklyn, NY and was educated in Brooklyn parochial schools. During WWII he proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on July 12, 1945 with the rank of Private.
For forty years Mr. Schillberg had worked in the Sheet Metal Workers Union. He retired from Local Union 17 in Boston after 13 years of employment and formerly worked for Local Union 102 in Washington, DC.
An active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Norwood, he served as a member of the church building committee and was also a former church usher.
An ardent New England Patriots and New York Yankees fan, Larry also enjoyed spending time with his family and comrades at the Mansfield VFW Post 3264.
He possessed a talent to be able to fix almost anything and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to those in need. He had made his home in Mansfield for the past 37 years and was formerly a resident of Washington, DC.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his devoted children Edward L.V. Schillberg, Sr. of Norton, Larry M. Schillberg of Stoughton, Timothy A. Schillberg of North Attleboro, Debra S. Porter of Randolph and Dianne L. Schillberg of Norton. He was the adoring “Papa” to his 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and was pre-deceased by 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday July 1st at 10:00 A.M. in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church 24 Berwick St. Norwood. Burial with military honors will follow at 12:30 P.M. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday June 30th from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
Due to the limitation of flowers allowed at the National Cemetery, Mr. Schillberg’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Memorial Fund at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church 24 Berwick St. Norwood, MA 02062.
