Antonio G. "Tony" Pires, 58, of New Bedford died Friday June 25, 2010 at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Jose L. and Justa G. (Fernandes) Pires, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Pires was formerly employed by Leclair Movers.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He enjoyed playing chess and watching movies. He was a practical joker with a dry sense of humor.
Survivors include a daughter, Tara Carvalho and her husband Kevin of New Bedford; a brother, David Pires of New Bedford; six sisters, Maria Lessa and her husband Jose, Alcinda Gonzales and her husband Ayres, and Elizabeth Ferreira and her husband Tony, all of New Bedford, Eugenia Graca and her husband John of Taunton, Julia Benjamin of Nassau, Bahamas, and Victoria Pires and her husband Jack of California; a sister-in-law, Becky Pires of New Bedford; Cindy Pires of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Haylie and Hannah, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his extended family of residents and staff of the Swansea Rest Home.
He was the brother of the late Daniel F. Pires, who passed away on June 25, 2008.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 12 Noon at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
