Obituary

William J. Mara, 88 years, of Quincy, formerly of Brockton and Falmouth died unexpectedly Monday June 21, 2010 at Quincy Medical Center. He was the devoted husband of Marjorie H. (Curry) Mara for 64 years. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph L. and Mary E. (Oakley) Mara. During WW II Bill served in the US Navy as a physical instructor. Following the war, he attended Boston College where he was a member of the basketball team.

In 1991 Bill retired as the Director of the Brockton Housing Authority, a position he held for many years. He had recently retired from the Plymouth County Mosquito Control after 25 years of service. Politics was a passion in Bill’s life. He served two separate terms in the Brockton City Council, was elected Councilor at Large and served as Brockton Highway Commissioner. Bill was a broker/developer with McCormack & Company for over 30 years. Bill treasured his time spent with his family and grandchildren, his summers in Falmouth and winters in Florida.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, William J. Mara and his wife Carol of Falmouth; Francis G. Mara and his wife Delight of Brockton; Thomas M. Mara of Brockton; Susan Parent and her husband Jerry of Pecos, TX; Patricia Mara of N. Falmouth, Joseph L. Mara and his wife Patricia of Plymouth; Sheila A. Phipps and her husband Thomas of Duxbury; Virginia F. Ederle and her husband Douglas of Duxbury and the late Robert A. Mara. Bill leaves 20 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and was the brother of the late Sr. Joseph Ellen Mara, SCN.

Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Monday at 8am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton at 9am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday 3-6pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
