Steven W. Child, 59, a lifelong resident of Chester, NH, died suddenly Friday June 18, 2010 at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. Steven was born in Ipswich, MA to Beverly (Lovett) Child and the late Robert Child.
Steven worked as a Rural Route Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Chester for over 35 years and as a member and Deputy Chief of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department. He also started the Bob Child Memorial Fire Prevention Poster Contest. More recently, he was the owner of the Little Engine Snow Plowing and Mowing Company and was the Trustee and Superintendent of the Chester Village Cemetery for the past 6 years. He helped organize the Chester Veteran’s Day Parade and ceremony for the past several years. Mr. Child even chauffeured Santa Claus around Chester for over 30 years, showing him where the good children lived. An avid model train collector, Steven enjoyed snowmobiling, snow plowing, fishing, camping with his son, R.J., the Red Sox and the Manchester Monarchs hockey team.
Mr. Child leaves his beloved wife of 21 years, Lori (Rossetti) Child. He also leaves his three children, R.J. “Robert” Child of Chester, Melissa Gilbert of Derry, Kathryn Schofield of Freedom, NH, a grandson, Brandon Gilbert, a sister, Roberta Leighton of St. Petersburg, FL, and his mother, Beverly Child of St. Petersburg, FL.
Calling hours were held on Thursday, June 24th from 4 - 7pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. The funeral service were held on Friday at 10:00am in the Chester Congregational Baptist Church, Chester St., Chester. The burial followed in the Great Hill Cemetery in Chester.
