Ruth M. (Hobson) Hayward of Wayland passed away peacefully on Friday June 4, 2010 at the age of 78 with her family at her bedside.
She was born March 31, 1932 in Fairhaven and was the youngest daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Harrison) Hobson.
Ruth was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, where she was involved in the music programs and played several sports. Ruth continued her education at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. After Nursing School she married Harold O. Hayward, Jr. Together they raised their children and traveled the world as a proud U.S. Army family. Ruth spent most of her adult life in Wayland working locally as a nurse. She worked at Leonard Morse Hospital, Cochituate Nursing Home (now Wayland Nursing and Rehabilitation) and Kathryn Barton Nursing Home which she retired from in 2003.
Ruth loved spending time with her family and particularly enjoyed following the athletic endeavors of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid Boston sports fan and particularly enjoyed the Red Sox. She was involved in many varied arts and crafts including crocheting, knitting and cross-stitch. As a part of her healthy lifestyle, she was seen walking regularly along Concord Road and working out at the gym.
Ruth is survived by her five children, Sheryl Hayward Lanzo and her husband Hector; Joseph Hayward and his wife Jill; Steven Hayward and his wife Kathy; Karen Nardone and her husband Gary and Brian Hayward and his wife Paula. Ruth was adored by her 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great- grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Joan Simmons and her husband Franklin and two nephews.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Monday, June 14, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland. Funeral services will be private.
