Obituary

Stephen M. Sweet, 87, of Sandown, NH died June 14, 2010 in the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, Fremont, NH. Mr. Sweet was born in Waterville, ME on April 11, 1923, son of the late Charles and Priscilla (Stephens) Sweet. He graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1941. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, marrying his wife of 66 years, Doris Lane in 1943.
He was employed by the Main Central Railroad and Portland Terminal Co. for 13 years as an electrical inspector. He also worked for Improved Machinery, now known as Ingersol Rand as a service technician for 5 years. He was active in the Scarborough, ME Lion's Club, Fire Department Rescue Squad and Police Department and Scouting, and Little League. He worked for Thomas & Betts, Doyletown, PA, retiring after 10 years as Maintenance Manager. He also became a plant engineer at Maryland Plastics, Federalsburg, MD and later retired from the BASF Corp. in Bedford, MA as engineering manager in 1990. He served as past president of the American Institute of Plant Engineers.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lodge #44, F & AM in Derry, NH and past member of the Merrimack Lodge, F & AM, Haverhill, MA. He was member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Nashua, NH, past officer with the I.O.O.F and the Mizpah Rebekah Lodge #15, both of Derry. For three years he served on the Sandown planning board. Most important to Mr. Sweet was his service as chairman of trustees at the East Hampstead Union Church and as past governor at the Society of Mayflower Descendants.
He is survived by his wife, Doris E. (Lane) Sweet of Sandown, one daughter, Charlotte Kaufmann of Winslow, ME, two sons, Pastor Paul Sweet of Sandown and Duane Sweet of Germany, four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elaine Sweet in 2006.
Calling hours were held on Wednesday June 16, 2010 from 10 - 11am in the East Hampstead Union Church, 225 Main St., E. Hampstead, NH. Funeral services followed at 11:00am in the church. Graveside services were held on Thursday at 11:00am at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville, ME. In lieu of flowers, memorials to East Hampstead Union Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 109, E.
