LAWRENCE- Capt. Carl R Schiavone, 98, a lifelong resident of Lawrence, died after a short illness Saturday, June 12, at Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Lawrence on December 26, 1911, the son of Domenic and Vincenza (Grieco) Schiavone, Carl was educated attending Lawrence grammar schools. He graduated from Lawrence High School with the class of 1929 and attended St. John’s Prep as a post graduate student. In 1932, Carl earned his pilot’s license completing the flight training requirements of the Curtis & Wright flying school.
During his forty-one (41) years as a Police Officer on the Lawrence Police force from 1935 to his retirement in 1976, Captain Schiavone moved through the ranks from a Reserve Police Officer to Captain of the Detective division. Among his many commendations and achievements while on the force, he was proud to have had the distinction of being named Lawrence’s first Police Training Officer. In addition to his Police career, Carl owned and operated the D & S Messenger Service, an armored car transportation provider for local businesses for more than twenty years
A devoted family man, known simply as “PAPA” by all who knew him, is survived by daughters Kathleen M. LeFebre of Lawrence, Ann E. and her husband Patrick Saitta of Boxford and Eileen M. and her husband Lawrence Fire Captain Donald Burke of Merrimack; sons Terrance D Schiavone of Atlanta, Georgia and Carl “Mickey” Schiavone of Hampton, New Hampshire; stepsons Bart J Galvin Jr. and his wife Brenda of North Andover, Peter D Galvin and his wife Shirley of North Andover and Thomas F. Galvin and his companion Diane Glynn of Methuen; 29 Grandchildren and 52 Great Grandchildren as well as and several nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his wives, Marion (Galvin) and Elizabeth (Montgomery) (Galvin), his son, Patrick, former Lawrence Police Chief, his mother and father, and his four sisters, Mrs. Jack (Celi) DiBurro, Mrs. David (Madeline) Champy , Mrs. Armand (Patricia) Feole and Mrs. Joseph (Anna) DiBurro.
Carl, a faithful parishioner of Our Lady Good Counsel Parish, was a long time member of the Lawrence Police Officers Union, the Lawrence Police Relief Association, the Mass Police Officers Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of Italy.
To acknowledge the professional care that has been provided to their father and grandfather during his recent illness, the family would like to offer special thanks to the nurses and staff of the fourth floor Russell building of Lawrence General Hospital, the nurses and staff of the Prescott Nursing Rehab facility in North Andover and the nurses and staff of the Merrimack Valley Hospice.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish-St. Augustine’s Chapel, 128 Ames St., Lawrence.
