Arthur V. Swaye, 73, of New Bedford died November 5, 2003 at unexpectedly St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Thelma G. (Coop) Swaye, to whom he was married for 47 years.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of the late Manuel and Bertha (Michelson) Swaye, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
He was formerly employed as an associate professor of Textile Engineering for 37 years at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. In 1963, as a design project, he and his students wove a profile of President John F. Kennedy and later received a letter of recognition from President Kennedy. He was a textile consultant for NASA, US Army Intelligence and MIT and several textile manufacturing companies throughout the world including Normandy Bedspreads. He wrote two textile textbooks, Design & Structure I and Design & Structure II, donating the profits to the Fashion Institute in New York.
Mr. Swaye attended North Carolina State and later received his Bachelor's degree and Master's degree from New Bedford Textile Institute.
He enjoyed swimming, exercising, his dog Dreyfus and projects with family and neighbors.
Mr. Swaye served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen Swaye, and his wife Pamela, of New Bedford; a daughter, Cathy Carlisle, and her husband James, of New Bedford; a sister, Esther Torres of New Bedford; 2 grandchildren, Joshua Swaye and Benjamin Swaye; and a niece, Marsha Torres.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordSaturday, November 8th at 7 PM. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres to follow at 7:30 PM at the Wamsutta Club.
Visiting hours Saturday, November 8th from 4-7 PM, prior to the service.
Interment private.
