Obituary

Robert J. “Bumper” DesChenes, 86, of 565 Main Street in the Cherry Valley section of Leicester died Thursday, June 3 in St. Vincent Hospital after an illness.

His wife Barbara I. (Fitman) DesChenes died in 1982. He leaves a son Michael J. DesChenes of Paxton, two daughters Mary Beth “Betsy” Hallen of Antrim, N.H., Amy L. DesChenes of Swampscott, nine grandchildren Joycelynn, Myles, Jessica, Andrew, Meagan, Emmasay, Takoda, Esther & Melanie, and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. DesChenes was born in Worcester, son of John and Mary (Costin) DesChenes. He graduated from Vespa George School of Art in Boston. He was an Exhibit Director at the former Worcester Science Center for many years. He was an accomplished artist and gave art lessons for over 40 years at his Art Gallery & Frame Shop in Cherry Valley. He was a member of St. Pius X Church. He enjoyed painting and the outdoors. He served in the United States Army during WW II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held Sunday, June 13 from 2:00-6:00 PM at his son’s home, 27 Lancelot Drive in Paxton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Central Mass Chapter for Homeless Veterans, 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605. MORIN-MORRISON FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main Street, Leicester is directing arrangements.
