Alexander “Al” Chase, 92 of Walpole died June 7 at his home following a long illness, he was the husband of the late Christine (Solbo) Chase for 43 years until her death in 1985.
Born in Boston, August 18, 1917, the son of the late Mike and Annie (Kerstia) Chase, Mr. Chase was raised on Dean Street in Norwood and had lived in Walpole for the past 60 years.
He was a 1935 graduate of Norwood High School.
Mr. Chase first worked as a supervisor for the Armour and Company in their woolen plants in New York City and Chicago.
Mr. Chase then opened Chase Package Store on Main Street in Walpole, selling groceries, beer and wine for 27 years. He then worked at the Walpole Tool Rental until he was 80.
Mr. Chase served in the Army during Word War II.
He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Army’s 20th Armored Division as a communications officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
Al loved to travel, visiting friends in Florida. He enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean and Mexico, and also explored the Swiss Alps. An avid photographer he captured family life and travel since 1935. He loved to explore New England and one of his favorite day trips was to Newport, Rhode Island.
He is survived by his son, Alexander R. Chase of Maine and his daughters, Deanna Shock of Walpole and Vivian Chase-Williams and her husband Eugene of Walpole.
He was the father-in-law of the late John Shock.
He is also survived by his sister, Florence McGranary of Norwood.
He was the brother of the late Natalie Kondertovich and William Chase.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and 2 family dogs.
His funeral will be held on Friday, June 11 from the Ginley Funeral Home 892 Main St. in Walpole at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in South Walpole.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
