Obituary

Thomas P. Barrett, 77, of Dartmouth died November 4, 2003 at at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Ruth M. (Lecuyer) Barrett to whom he was married for 56 years.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Thomas C. and Lillian (Heyford) Barrett, he lived in Dartmouth for the past 51 years.

Mr. Barrett was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1945 and in 2000, he attended his 55th reunion.

He was formerly employed by Revere Copper and Brass as a Methods Man for 16 years. He was later employed by Morse Cutting Tools as an industrial engineer for 24 years.

Mr. Barrett was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church and attended Mass at Our Lady's Chapel in Downtown New Bedford. He was one of the first three Eucharistic ministers under Rev. John Hogan. He was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis at Our Lady's Chapel.

In 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard a PT boat in World War II. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Campaign Medal. He was a founder of St. Isidore the Farmer Council of the Knights of Columbus of Dartmouth and Westport and served as its first financial secretary. He was the Cub Master for Pack 74 at St. George Church in Westport and counselled many dens in Dartmouth and Westport. He attended Camp Noquochoke in Westport.

Mr. Barrett was one of Dartmouth's first appointed Conservation Commissioners, was an elected member of the Dartmouth Planning Board, was a member of the D.Y.A.A. and manager of Yankee Little League baseball team. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and PT Boat Inc. in Nashville, Tennessee.His hobbies included hunting, fishing, bird hunting, walking, bike riding, attending morning Mass, reading and doing handy man work.

Survivors include his widow; 3 sons, Thomas P. Barrett, of Westport, Terrence M. Barrett of San Francisco and Michael A. Barrett, and his wife Stephanie, of Dartmouth; a brother, Norman Barrett, and his wife Doris, of Dartmouth; a sister, Grace Barton of New Bedford; 5 grandchildren, Emily A. Barrett and Thomas A. Barrett, both of Westport, Michael P. Barrett, Patrick Barrett and Timothy Barrett, all of Dartmouth.

He was the brother of the late Kathleen Omhan.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordFriday, November 7th at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Thursday, November 6th from 2-5 PM.

Interment Friends Cemetery, Dartmouth.
