TEWKSBURY - Anthony J. “Tony” Galinis, age 85, well known throughout the greater Lowellarea, died unexpectedly Monday evening, Nov. 3, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell. He was the husband of Gloria T. (Travers) Galinis, with whom he had celebrated a 53rd weddinganniversary this past Sept. 24th.
He was born in Cambridge, Nov. 22, 1917, the son of the late John and Ludwicka “Louise”(Gotszelt) Galinis. He was a graduate of Somerville High School, class of 1935 and attended theBoston University school of (then) Public Relations in 1945. He lived in Cambridge, beforemoving to Tewksbury in 1956. His career spanned over four decades as a reporter/writer andpostal employee. Specifically, he was sports editor for the Athol Daily News, news reporter forthe Lowell Sun, editor for the Tewksbury edition of the Wilmington Town Crier, and editor of theTewksbury Hospital news magazine. As a postal employee, he was a letter carrier and, ultimately,postal supervisor for the Central Square Post Office in Cambridge.
During WWII, he served in the Army as a Staff Sergeant, stationed in the Middle East. Thisincluded him being stationed in Iran, where he was the first staff correspondent for the commandnewspaper in 1943.
Moreover, he contributed to the community by being a member of the Tewksbury Golden AgeClub, and as an active participant of the Tewksbury Senior Center. He was also a member of theD.A.V. Post 110 in Tewksbury.
Lastly, he was President for four years of the Lowell Chapter of the National Association ofRetired Federal Employees (NARFE) and Public Relations Chairman of the state of MA NARFE1980-1985.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and her husband RobertFoster of Tewksbury; one son, Paul Galinis of No. Andover; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jeanette Pecevich of Lynnfield, Frances and her husband William Smaldone of Chelmsford,Helen and her husband William Ryan of Belmont; two grandsons, Christopher and Joel Foster; asister and brother-in-law, Corrine and John Weber of Waltham, and several nieces and nephews.He was also brother of the late Angela “Nellie” Cameron and Louise “Sandy” Maturse.
His Funeral Mass was held Friday, Nov. 7 in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
