Albert DeMello, 87, of New Bedford died June 6, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Mary (Silva) DeMello.
Born in Dartmouth, son of the late Frank and Guiomar (Pacheco) DeMello, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church.
At age 23, he designed and built his home and enjoyed his woodworking immensely.
Albert worked at Sylvia & Brown Market on Union St. for 20 years where upon purchasing the grocery store from its retiring owners. He owned and operated the business along with his wife Mary until his retirement in 1985. The market was a New Bedford landmark well known for fine meats, homemade foods and specialized service. Albert enjoyed his retirement to its fullest spending time creating many lasting and beautiful memories with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Mr. DeMello served as a seargent in the U.S. Army during World WarII with the 290th Infantry Regiment, participating in the Battles and Campaigns of the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the American Theater Campaign ribbon, the Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement while in battle, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.
Survivors include a son, Albert DeMello, Jr. and his wife Gail of North Dartmouth; a daughter, Nancy Francis and her husband Daniel of Acushnet; and 5 cherished grandchildren, Scott Francis and his fiancé Maria Carlson, Jeffrey Francis and his wife Heidi, Casey DeMello, Shawn DeMello, and Sarah DeMello; 2 great-grandchildren, Keira and Gavin Francis.
He was the brother of the late Frank DeMello, Jr. and Raymond DeMello.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 9th at 11 AM in St. Julie Billiart Church, North Dartmouth. Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours are omitted.
