John B. Hagan was born in Chelsea on November 23, 1934 to George and Frances Hagan. The youngest of 4 children, he had 3 older sisters, Barbara, Madeline and June. He passed from this world on May 10th after a brief illness.
John attended Chelsea Public Schools, graduating from the Williams school in 1950 and Chelsea High School in 1953 where he was a stellar athlete excelling in football, track and basketball. Upon completion of high school, John served his country honorably by joing the United States Army on active duty from 1953 to 1955 and the Army Reserve from 1955 to 1962.
He married Althea Wolcott in 1960 and had 3 sons, John, Jr., Christopher and Jeffrey. He was employed for 30 years as a lineman for the New England Telephone retiring in 2004.
John's true passion was sports. Not only was he a rabid supporter of Boston's professional sports teams but also his local Chelsea High School sports teams as well, culminating with induction to his alma mater, the Chelsea High School Hall of Fame in 1987. John leaves his three sons, John B. Hagan, Jr. of Boston, Christopher Hagan and his wife Trudy of Maryland, Jeffrey Hagan of New York, his sister Madeline Cromwell and nephews, Ricky and Johnny Cromwell.
Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Memorial Service celebrating John's life on Friday, June 11th at 10 AM in the Smith Funeral Home, 125 Washington Avenue, Chelsea, with the Rev. Sandra Willey, Pastor of the People's AME Church of Chelsea officiating.
