Obituary

Daniel J. Sullivan, 60, of Dedham died on March 20, 2010, at Norwood Hospital, of respiratory failure, a complication of treatment for rectal cancer.

Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Ann (McGowan) Sullivan, he had resided in Golden Living Center in Dedham.

He graduated from New Bedford High School and attended what is now UMASS-Dartmouth from 1972-1977.

He worked in the New Bedford area as a laborer for various firms. As a young man, he developed proficiency on the saxophone, flute and harmonica and played in informal jams and a few professional gigs. He was fond of children and they of him. In 2001, he became disabled due to dementia from alcohol abuse and spent his remaining years in hospital or nursing home care.

He is survived by his brother Peter Sullivan and his wife, Jeanne, of Washington, DC and Eagles Mere, PA; his nephew, Daniel F. Sullivan, of Washington, DC; his niece, Kathleen Sullivan Nelson, and her husband, Andrew Nelson, of Washington, DC; the widow of his late nephew, Thomas J. Sullivan, Katherine Sullivan, and his grand niece, Ava Sullivan, daughter of Thomas and Katherine, of Park Ridge, IL; and several cousins.

Relatives and friends may call at Saunders-Dwyer Funeral Home, 495 Park St., New Bedford, MA, on Friday, June 11, 2010, from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.; a memorial service will begin at 8:45 P.M. Interment of cremains will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made be made to the Jimmy Fund-Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7295.
