Methuen, MA - Philip A. Moan, 84, died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by his family. Born on May 24th, 1926, Philip was the son of (Felix) Philip Moan and Rose (Goebel) Moan.
Philip Moan was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy as a radioman. He subsequently worked for over 30 years as a machinist, a trade he loved. His position before retiring was Foreman of the machine shop at DuPont-Merck in Billerica, MA.
Philip enjoyed playing hearts, solving crossword puzzles, spending time at the Salisbury Beach cottage, and swimming in the ocean with his family. He enjoyed traveling to England, which he did often. He was also an avid reader, birdwatcher, and handyman. Philip Moan was considered the Rock by his family, who meant the world to him. He was a man of few words; but when he spoke, everyone listened. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Philip was the widower of the late Julia (Palaimo) Moan, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage. He was father of the late Gerald Moan of Tewksbury. His memory will live on in the hearts of his daughters: Kathleen Woodman and her husband Douglas of Methuen; Paula Moan-Smith and her husband Eugene Smith of Georgia; Maria Palaima of Boston; and Madelyn Kidder of Haverhill; and his daughter in-law Diane Moan. He is survived by his eight grandchildren: Laura Smith; Randall, Brian and Kevin McGravey; Philip, Gregory, Daniel, and Theresa Moan with her fiancé Michael Albergo Jr. Brother of the late Barbara Shackleton of Salem, N.H., Phil is survived by sisters Pauline Whalley of Bartlett, NH and Elizabeth Hannon of Bedford, NH. He will be lovingly remembered by close family friend, Amy L. Conley of Boston, and by many nieces and nephews.
