Obituary

Mary Grace Sherman, 92, formerly of Andover and recently a resident at Edgewood in North Andover, died peacefully in her sleep on June 1,2010.
Mary was born in 1918 in Melrose, MA, the only daughter of Frank James and Gracie Allen Sherman, and sister of the six “Fighting Sherman Brothers”, who served with distinction during World War II. She attended The George Washington University and the Katherine Gibbs School. After moving to Andover, Mary was one of the morning train regulars, commuting to Boston where she had a fulfilling career as the executive secretary for over 30 years to the Honorable Bailey Aldrich, presiding Justice of the First Circuit, Federal Court of Appeals.
Mary’s interests included reading - she kept a journal in which she entered every book she read. History of all eras but particularly New England history was also a great interest and she was a member of the Andover Historical Society and volunteered at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell. She traveled often to Europe, particularly England and she was a long time patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mary was an avid golfer and a member of the North Andover Country Club. A member of Christ Church, Andover, Mary served the church in a variety of capacities and volunteered at the Thrift Shop for many years. She will always be remembered as well for her devotion to her family.
Mary is survived by a large extended family including her nephew Frank James Sherman III and his wife Suzanne, David Sherman and Melissa Garand and family, of Andover, Melissa Sherman Tassinari and family of Boston MA and Bethesda, MD, Frank James Sherman IV of Philadelphia PA and many other nieces and nephews who loved her.

There will be a private burial and a Memorial Celebration of Mary’s life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Renew and Rejoice Capital Campaign, Christ Church, 25 Central Street, Andover MA 01810 or a charity of one’s choice.
