Joseph P. Gargan Sr.

...retired plumber at Tewksbury Hospital; 83

TEWKSBURY - Joseph P. Gargan Sr., age 83, a member of the Navy’s elite “Armed Guard”during WWII, died Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Healthsouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital inWoburn, after a two year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Alice D. (Pulsifer) Gargan,with whom he had celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary this past March 28th.

He was born in Lowell, August 18, 1920, a son of the late Joseph and Ellen (O’Brien) Gargan. He was raised in Lowell and attended Lowell Schools. He had resided in Flucker Heights SeniorHousing in Tewksbury, since his retirement.

During WWII, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific and Asian Theaters. He served as amember of the “Armed Guard” aboard the S.S. William M. Stewart, and participated in the battlesfor Okinawa and the Layette Gulf.

Upon discharge, he worked in several of the wool mills in Lowell and Lawrence as a steam fitterand plumber. He retired from the Tewksbury Hospital in 1985, after serving for more than 21years as a plumber and steam fitter.

He was a member of the Walker-Rogers V.F.W. Post in Lowell, and a former member of theDracut Cribbage League.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy A. and her husband Gary Kaufman ofLincoln, CA, Joanne Rich of Dracut; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph P. Jr., and his wife Linda(Hodgson) Gargan of Hudson, NH; seven grandchildren, Colleen Berumen, Patricia Lopez, andRebecca Dutton all of CA, Kathleen Rich of Dracut, Leann Gargan, Joseph P. Gargan III, andShawna Gargan all of Hudson, NH; five great granddaughters, Angelina, Jessica, Vanessa,Kaitlyn, and Briana; and 1 great great granddaughter, Natalie.

He was also father-in-law of the late James T. Rich, and brother of the late Helen Davis and JohnGargan.

At his request funeral services were private.
