John Bubbers died Sunday, May 23rd following a long illness with cancer. He was born in Lawrence, MA January 17, 1925 of German immigrant parents. The family returned to Germany in the mid 1930’s. However, the approach of WWII shortened their stay and they returned to New York in 1939. John is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and New York University. John had a lifelong love of learning, of engineering and of music. Over the years, he combined these interests as an audio engineer at radio stations, a record producer, a designer of audio equipment and an avocation for classical music. John built and owned a factory that made records and this company was the first to manufacture L.P. stereo records. John was a ham radio operator for over 70 years.
In retirement John continued to be active in many areas. He taught himself a number of computer languages and wrote programs so that other ham radio operators could track satellites. Despite the fact that his physical world narrowed significantly over the last years, he maintained a keen interest in engineering, politics and his family. John was a former president and Fellow in the Audio Engineering Society, editor for the Amateur Satellite Journal, past president of the Winchester Senior Association and an active member of a local men’s group.
John leaves his wife, Janice of Winchester, daughter Susan Scott and her husband James of North Andover, son J. Eric Bubbers and his wife Sandra Welgreen of Los Angeles, CA, Marian Bubbers Laroche and her husband Paul of Harpswell, ME, and step-son Ralph H. Nay and his wife Mary Anne of Boxford. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 19 @ 11:00 a.m. in the Unitarian Church of Winchester, 478 Main St. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Winchester Senior Association, 109 Skillings Rd., Winchester or to Winchester Hospital, 41 Highland Ave. Winchester, MA 01890.
