Obituary

Plymouth - Mary M. (Corthell) Benson, 78, of Plymouth, formerly of Whitman passed away May 19, at the New England Sinai Hospital, Dorchester comforted by her family, after a courageous battle against lung disease.

Born and raised in Whitman, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (Hayes) Corthelll, and a 1950 graduate of Whitman High School.

While raising her family, Mary worked for 22 years at F. Cavicchi & Co. After moving to Plymouth in 1984, she began work for Old Colony Elder Services as an ombudsman. During her retirement, she volunteered much of her time to the Jordan Hospital.

Mary enjoyed her summer days camping at Nickerson State Park and later, her time spent in Jensen Beach, Florida. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mary will always be remembered for her kind and compassionate heart.

Mary is survived by her loving children Paula Tassinari and her husband Michael of Marshfield, Maryann Cavicchi and her husband Edward of Plymouth, Timothy Benson and his wife Gisele of Plymouth, and Margaret Benson of Plymouth. She was the cherished grandmother of Philip and Leah Tassinari, Andrea and Maria Cavicchi, Nicole and Gregory Benson, and Jillian Benson. She was the sister of Margaret A. Asack of West Bridgewater, Barbara Lounge of Brockton, Robert Corthell of Bridgewater, and the late Richard Corthell of Carver. Mary was the ex-wife and best friend of the late Raymond L. Benson of Plymouth.

Through her illness, Mary greatly appreciated the kindness shown by her family and her many friends, and deepest gratitude for the compassion and care shown by the New England Sinai Hospital, Dorchester, MA.

Her funeral service will be held Monday May 24 at 10:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a mass at 11 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Sunday May 23 from 3 -7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation 220 N. Main Street #104, Natick, MA 01760-1100
