Mae Lita Ashurst Handley, 93, of Ben Hill County died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Life Care Center.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 22 at Pine Level United Methodist Church with Rev. Annette Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 Friday evening.
Mrs. Handley was born December 22, 1916 in Ben Hill County to the late J.K. and Mittie Mae Ball Ashurst. She was a 1934 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. Mrs. Handley operated the Fitzgerald Railroad Shops Restaurant, was a former employee of Abe Kruger Department Store in Fitzgerald and of Burdine’s Department Store in Miami, FL. She and her husband owned and operated Handley’s Paint Store in Marathon, FL, before moving back to the Fitzgerald area. She was a member of Pine Level United Methodist Church and a long-time member of the American Legion Auxillary.
Mrs. Handley is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kyle and Dorothy Jean Fuller of Fitzgerald and Kenny Drew and Carol Fuller of Hiawassee, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Rick Roth of Grassy Key, FL; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren, as well as nephews Ted and Ray Ashurst. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, E.K. Fuller and Robert V. “Bob” Handley, and a brother, Ed Ashurst.
