Elwood Mitchell was born April 3, 1934, the son of the late Camille and Elwood A. Mitchell, Sr. and Agnes S. Mitchell. He retired from the Medical College of Georgia after 30 years of service. He was a member of Hill Baptist Church and for the past few years of illness has been ministered to through the television ministry of Curtis Baptist Church and Pastors Mark Sterling and Sherrell Dunn. He was affectionately known and cherished by his grandchildren as PaPa, and by his friends and relatives as Sonny. He enjoyed working in the yard with his wife, Vivian, spending time with his children and grandchildren, reading, and taking care of his Pomeranian companion, Lady. He demonstrated great courage and strength as he battled cancer this past year. He was a pillar of strength and a motivation to many.
He is survived by his daughters, Nancy M. Haywood, of Martinez, GA and Kathy M. Tenenbaum (David), of Alpharetta, GA and his son, Zackery A. Mitchell, of Augusta, GA. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Stephanie Haywood, Hilton Head, SC, Stephen Haywood (Julie), North Augusta, SC, Michaela Mitchell and Jessica Mitchell, both of Lexington, SC, Jeffrey Tenenbaum, Joseph Tenenbaum, and Joanie Tenenbaum, all of Alpharetta, GA. They were all precious to him. We will all miss his incredible sense of humor and remarkable wisdom.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the following for their services, care, and compassion: Dr. Michael Cohen and staff, Dr. Karen Yeh and staff, Dr. Billy Lynn and staff, Dr. Brent Limbaugh and staff, the doctors, nurses and staff of Trinity Hospital, Walton Rehab, Georgia Radiation Therapy Center, and the nurses and staff of Trinity Hospice.
