Obituary

Presvytera Irene H. (Vouros) Bebis, 72, of New Bedford, MA died Monday January 21, 2002 at home after a long illness. She was the wife of the Reverend Constantine S. Bebis, pastor of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Bedford.

Born in Belmont,the daughter of the late George and Helen (Avtges) Vouros, she had resided in New Bedford since 1953. She was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1946 and the Stratford Business School of Boston where she received her certificate as a medical secretary. She had been a member of the Pythagoras Musical Group of Boston and the Maids of Athens of Boston, where she had served as vice-president. She had served as the organist at the Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, MA, and taught Sunday School in Danbury, CT and New Bedford. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member, board member, and Past President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society.

Mrs. Bebis was formerly employed as a teacher's aide in the New Bedford Public School System for 20 years until her retirement. Prior to that she had been employed as a medical secretary at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT, then for Dr. Irwin Jaslow and Dr. Gilbert Shapiro in New Bedford.

Survivors include her husband; 3 sons, Stephen Bebis and his wife Michele of Toronto, Canada, George C. Bebis and his wife Constance L. of Lakeville, and Rev. Paul C. Bebis and his wife Theresa of Enfield, CT; a daughter, Constance O. Bebis-Miranda and her husband Leivinha of New Bedford; 2 brothers, Costa Vouros and his wife Nancy, and James Vouros and his wife Evanthea, all of Cape Coral, FL; 9 grandchildren, Stephanie, Kathryn, Dean, Michael, Alaina, Alexander, Rebecca, Barbara, and Joshua; her brothers-in-law, Dr. George S. Bebis of Brookline and Charles Boudouris of Reading; her sister-in-law, Stella Dalley and her husband Edward of Australia; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was the sister of the late Mary Boudouris.

A Divine Liturgy will by conducted by members of the Clergy of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Boston on Thursday at 9 AM in St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Bedford. Her Funeral Service, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, will follow at 11 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Bedford. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday Jan. 23, 2002 from 1-3 and 6-9 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, and on Thursday from 8-9 AM in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, prior to the Divine Liturgy. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Bebis Memorial Trust Fund, c/o St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 87 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02746.
