Obituary

John Joseph McHugh, formerly of Weymouth, MA, died peacefully in his home on Little Micajah Pond, Plymouth, MA on May 13, 2010.

John was born on April 19, 1929 in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, the second son of Michael Joe McHugh and Margaret O’Brien McHugh. He immigrated to the United States when he was 17 years old and became a naturalized American citizen as soon as he could. He would often say, “Tis a great country!”

He was a foreman for Custodis Construction Company for years, traveling up and down the eastern seaboard repairing 400’ industrial smokestacks – a dangerous job that he truly loved. When he was 29 years old, he embarked on a new adventure, marrying a widow with three children that he loved with all his heart. His family was completed by the birth of his son, Michael Joe, the apple of his eye. His entire family meant everything to him, always keeping in touch with family in Ireland, England and St. Louis. He loved family gatherings and was always willing to lend a hand without being asked. The loss to his family is immeasurable.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Julia DeCristofaro McHugh of Plymouth; his daughter, Judith Knowles Raye and her husband Edward of Kennebunk, ME; his sons, Michael Joseph McHugh and his wife Cheryl of Foxborough, MA and Peter Knowles and his wife Louisa of Barre, MA. In addition, he is survived by his brother Jarlath and his wife Marie of Ireland, his sisters, Mary Barrepski, Helena Bolduc and her husband Robert of Chicopee, MA, Anne McGrath and her husband Michael, Margaret Lee, and sisters-in-law Anna McHugh of Ireland and Anne McHugh of London. He is also survived by the grandchildren he adored: Jesse Knowles of Brunswick, GA, Julie Raye Horton of Westford, MA, Emily and Austin Knowles of Barre, MA and John Joseph McHugh III, Maureen McHugh and Colleen McHugh of Foxborough, MA and many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Kenneth M. Knowles, and his brothers, Thomas, Ciaran, Patrick, Joseph and James.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 18th at 11 o’clock at St. Peter’s Church in Plymouth. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass at the Richard Davis Funeral Home, 373 Court Street, N. Plymouth from 9:45 to 10:45 AM. Interment will be private.

The family has requested no flowers. Contributions can be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth, MA 02360.
