Lorenzo H. Cournoyer, 86, of Congress St., Woonsocket, died Sunday at Oakland Grove. He was the husband of Irene A. (Allard) Cournoyer. They were married on September 2, 1944.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Noe and Hortense (Brillon) Cournoyer. He was a lifelong resident of Woonsocket.
During WWII Mr. Cournoyer worked as a specialized machinist for Taft-Pierce Manufacturing. His skills were necessary for the production of special parts and machinery for the war effort. He was later employed by the Rochambeau Worsted as a foreman for 38 years until retiring in 1984.
Mr. Cournoyer was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. He was a member of the St. Joseph Senior Citizens Club, St. Joseph bowling league, and the Happy Rollers.
Lorenzo was a champion quoits player and a longtime Montreal Canadiens fan. He took great pleasure in teaching his sons to skate from early childhood. During his retirement years he worked as an assistant for several area funeral homes.
Lorenzo possessed a variety of skills and talents. Rightly known as a jack-of-all-trades, he had a knack for being able fix or improve anything.
Lorenzo’s true passion in life was his garden. He possessed a profound expertise in horticulture and was noted for his meticulous attention to the variety of plants and vegetables he nurtured every year. He loved to share the bounty of his efforts with anyone he met.
He was a devoted husband and father and had a special love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by two sons, Richard N. “Dick” Cournoyer, and his wife Jeannette, of Woonsocket, and Henri G. Cournoyer, and his wife Elizabeth, of Bellingham. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was the brother of the late Normand Cournoyer.
His funeral will be Friday at 9:00 am from the Menard Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave., Woonsocket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Mendon Rd., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5-8 pm.
