James P. Sousa, 86

Dateline: Norton, MA

James P. Sousa, 86, a lifelong resident of Norton passed away on Saturday May 1, 2010 at the Golden Living Center-Ridgewood Court Nursing Home in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Nellie T. (LaGreca) Sousa to whom he was wed for over 32 years at the time of her death on January 17, 2004.
Born in Norton, MA on April 29, 1924 he was a loving son of the late Frank and Virginia (Silva) Sousa and was educated in Norton schools.
Mr. Sousa proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and on July 30, 1952 was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class and was also the recipient of the Korean War Medal.
Until retiring in 1994, Jim had worked as a Custodian for 20 years at the Norton High School and previously was employed as a Truck Driver for the former Fernandes Supermarkets in Norton for many years.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton, he was a member of the Bristol County Chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO and was also a former member of the Norton VFW Post 8049.
Jim enjoyed taking long walks, playing pool, pitch, gardening and when younger was an avid bowler. His favorite times spent where those in the presence of his adoring family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving and devoted children John R. Barbito and his wife Angie of Horseheads, New York, Georgette Henry of Edison, New Jersey, Camille K. Pirrello and her husband Carlo of Cedar Grove, New Jersey and Theresa J. “Terri” Fitzgerald of Norton who also served as his faithful caregiver. He was the dear brother Anthony Sousa and his wife Theo of Attleboro, Hilda Millette of Norton and the late Mary Silva, Christine Grudinskus, Joseph Sousa, Frank “Slug” Sousa, Alfred “Duke” Sousa, John Sousa and Gabriel Sousa. He is also survived by his cherished 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of his family at the Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton.
