Vernon Wesley Harris, 74 , of Louisville, minister for the Auburndale Church of Christ, has left his earthly home Thursday, April 29 , 2010, for the one he has been preparing years for.
Vernon has worked with the Auburndale congregation the last 14 ½ years. He valued his 35 years on the radio to be some of the most productive of his 47 years of preaching . Through this contact he had a very successful jail and prison ministry while in Alabama and Georgia. His wish last June was to live long enough to see the “Kentucky Wildcats have their great season”. You could often find Vernon “meditating in the cemetery” resulting in two volumes of printed sermons to be studied and used for any and all to prepare their way to a home in heaven when work here on earth is finished.
He was preceded in death by father, Burton Harris; mother, Halleene McDermed Harris; infant daughters, Bamby Lynn and Linda Lou Harris; and granddaughter, Amber Nicole Gentry.
Vernon leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mildred Dennison Harris; daughters, Sandy Blain (Terry) of Falls of Rough, Marty McQueen (Randy), of Shady Valley, TN; son, Mike Harris (Angela) of Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Ryan McQueen, Elena and Jay Harris; and brothers, Leon and Arthur Harris. Also surviving is “Granny” Alice Dennison, his mother-in-law who lives with them.
His service will be 1 0 am Monday at Auburndale Church of Christ, 5756 New Cut Road. Visitation will be 1-4pm Sunday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway and after 9: 0 0am Monday at the church.
