Laconia-----Edith Foote (Langley) Craigie, 88, a longtime resident of Laconia, died peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Laconia after a brief illness.
Edie was born on January 18, 1922 in Melrose, MA, the daughter of Arthur F. and Edith A. (Foote) Langley. She grew up in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1941. She worked for a defense contractor during WWII and later as a jewelry enameler. She married Harold R. Craigie in 1943 and they lived in Stoneham, MA. They moved to Lochmere, NH in 1953 when Harold became a teacher at the Laconia State School. The Craigie’s lived on Dartmouth Street in Laconia from 1961 until 2008. Edie also worked for a number of years at the Laconia State School assisting the residents in the sheltered workshop. In 1969, Edie was named N.H. Mother of the Year for the heroic rescue of a young girl from a house fire. Edie was extremely sociable, cheerful and outgoing. She loved her friends and neighbors and was always ready for a party. In fact, she was named the ‘Party Animal of Dartmouth Street’ in 2008. Her biggest joy over the past few years has been spending time with her 2 grandchildren, Connor and Alyssa, and watching them laugh and play together.
She was predeceased in 2003 by her husband of 59 years, Harold, and in 2008 by her son Ross. She is survived by her son, Raymond, and his wife, Pam, of Canterbury, her son, Jeffrey, of Brockton, MA, her daughter-in-law, Diana, and her 2 grandchildren, Connor and Alyssa, of Alton Bay, her sister, Etta Swanson, of Laconia, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 12:00pm (Noon) in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, N.H.
