Obituary

Mary Barna Shopay, 101, of Olyphant, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, in 1958.

Born in Dickson City, daughter of the late Andrew and Euphrosina Brunarsky Barna, she was employed in the silk industry. She was a homemaker, accomplished seamstress and creator of original and unique handcrafts. Mary was a member of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Blakely.

After her husband's death, she devoted her life to her five children. She was especially proud of the fact that all graduated from Penn State University, University Park, and continued their academic endeavors.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Patrick Conaboy, the eighth-floor staff at Mercy Hospital and her companion, Geri, from Home Instead for the compassionate and professional care they extended to Mary.

Surviving are four daughters, Ann Guida and husband, Donald, Lakeville; Maria Kolatis Davies and husband, Philip, Simpsonville, S.C.; Olga Morton and husband, Thomas, Jefferson City, Mo.; and Gloria Brown, Beaver; a son, Thomas and wife, Nellie, Dickson City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Willson.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and Joseph Barna, and two sisters, Anna Lahota and Catherine Mezick.

Funeral services will be Thursday from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home Inc., 129 Grant St., Olyphant, with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew's Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, with the Rev. Benjamin Warlinsky officiating. Interment, St. Andrew's Cemetery, Blakely. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Panakhyda services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
