Whitman - Francis X. “Frank” Connolly, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, of Whitman, formerly of Charlestown and Weymouth, died Wednesday April 21, 2010 at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born May 22, 1926 in Boston he was the son of the late James J. and Jennie B. Connolly, he resided in Charlestown until 1963 when he moved his family to Weymouth. He had lived in Whitman since 1978.
Frank served in the Merchant Marine on the USS Jesse Metcalf during World War II and also served in the US Navy Sea Bees as a Seaman First Class.
He was employed for 19 years at Revere Sugar Refinery in Charlestown as a crane mechanic and he retired in 1991 from Keystone Centrose where he had been employed as a building engineer. After retirement he enjoyed quiet time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his sons, David and Timothy; grandson, Rob Dumas, brother James Connolly; sisters, Katherine Spencer and Grace Cuocolo and son in law, Mark Fitzgerald.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret M Connolly of Whitman, daughters, Anne Marie Dumas and husband Bob of Woburn, Jane Fletcher of Florida, Barbara Kobs and husband Bill of Plymouth and Peggi Connolly of Whitman, sons Stephen Connolly and wife Lori of New York and Thomas Connolly and wife Betty of Abington; 21 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Frank will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family.
His services will be held on Monday April 26th at 9:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 AM, in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. His interment will be in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Family and friends may attend his visitation on Sunday, April 25th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to the Hospice of the South Shore 100 Bay State Drive / Box 9060 Braintree, MA 02184 or to the charity of one’s choice.
