Joseph I. (Joe) Coughlin, 89, of Hull, formerly of Hingham, died peacefully April 18, 2010 at the Harbor House Nursing and Rehab Center, Hingham after a period of declining health.
Joe was born and raised in Mattapan and attended Hyde Park High School where he was involved in athletics and was President of the class of 1939.
He joined the Marine Corps in World War II later graduating from the Navy Flight School in Chapel Hill, NC. He flew numerous missions in the South Pacific and with the Marine Air Group-25 in China.
Joe enjoyed a long career in sales and management with Bay State Milling Company.
An avid golfer he was a lifelong member of Marshfield Country Club where he recently received an Honorary Membership. He was active in the Cape Cod Pro-Am League and the New England Senior Golf Association.
Joe is predeceased by his loving wife Louise A. (Bowker) Coughlin. He is survived by his sister Gloria Hurley of Hingham, brother Edward Coughlin and wife Ruth of Milton and three children; Jane L. Petrie and husband Robert of Hull, Robert E. Coughlin and wife Margaret of Morrisville NC and Gary J. Coughlin and his wife Joette of Estero Fl.
Joe also leaves behind four grand children; Timothy Coughlin of Morrisville NC; R. Maxwell Petrie, Jr and wife Susan (Joyal) of Marshfield; Kelly (Coughlin) Shupe and husband Rich of South Riding VA and Christopher Petrie and fiancée Alison Speed of South Boston. He also leaves three great grand children; Andrew; Charlie and Emmett.
We would like to express our appreciation to all family, friends, neighbors, and the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice for their generous and loving acts of kindness during the last several years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St, Hingham from 5 to 8 PM Monday. The funeral services and interment are to be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in his memory to be made to the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 91 Longwater Circle, Norwell, MA 02061.
