Winnisquam-----Paul B. Covell, 78, of Winnisquam, N.H., formerly of Marblehead, MA, passed away on April 7, 2010.
Born on October 30, 1931, in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late Paul B. Covell, Sr. and Rose E. (Murphy) Covell.
He was a proud Korean Era Veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served as a Military Policeman and gunner/observer on S.A.C. bombers. Immediately after basic training, he participated in the Berlin Airlift. Mr. Covell was a onetime head of the U.S. Air Force Association for Veterans of the Boston area.
In the late 1950’s, Mr. Covell was the General Sales Manager of the Greyhound Tour Company for the entire east coast. He traveled extensively. He then embarked on a 30 year career in the hotel/motel, apartment/condominium management field. Mr. Covell was the General Manager of the Madison Hotel, the Vendome Hotel, and Tremont on the Common Apartments in Boston, Mass. Later, he was the General Manager of the Sales for the Sheraton-Hilton Hotel in New York City.
In June, 1969, Mr. Covell and his family moved to Marblehead, Mass. where he became the first General Manager of Glover Landing. After retiring from this field, he became a successful small businessman who owned and operated with his wife, on Lyndsey Street in Marblehead, Bix Furniture Stripping and Refinishing. After ten years, he then worked as one of the first salesman for Cap Cod Chips on the North Shore. Lastly, he enjoyed ten years with Flagship Travel Agency of Marblehead as a courier.
Mr. Covell was a past president of the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce, in the 1970’s. He was the coach of the Little League team, the Warriors, for 7 years, helping to lead them to two Little League Championships. He also organized the first annual Marblehead Little League Field Day at Gatchell’s Pit.
Mr. Covell was an avid reader, fisherman and gardener. He was an amateur historian and genealogist who was proud to trace back his family history many generations. But most of all, his proudest accomplishment was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Mr. Covell leaves his wife of 54 years, Astra I., of Winnisquam, N.H. He also leaves two sons: Richard P. of Winnisquam, N.H and David M. of New Orleans, Louisiana. He leaves his daughter, Cindy R, her husband, Robert M. Maher and grandson, Robert P., all of Knightdale, North Carolina and granddaughter, Jennifer R. and Christopher J. Reynolds and great granddaughter, Nola Rose, all of Revere, Mass.
