Robert O. Brown, 94, of Windham Falls Estates, Groton, formerly of Ledyard, died peacefully on Oct. 16, 2003, at Harborside Health Care, Madison House, in Madison, Conn.
Robert was born June 27, 1909, in New London, the son of the late Charles Robert and Martha Hill Brown.
Robert was married for 64 years to Dorothy Gray Brown. He leaves four children, Carol Webster of Hooksett, N.H., Robin Brown of Hamden, Conn., David Brown of Acworth, N.H., and Robert E. Brown of Griswold, Conn. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Robert was a graduate of the Bulkeley School in New London and Brown University. He was employed at Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corp., in Groton, retiring in the mid 1970s as a supervisor of shipyard employment.
Robert was active in numerous political and civic organizations in both New London and Ledyard. He was a past exalted ruler of the New London Lodge of Elks and served on the board of directors of Easter Seals of Southeastern Conn. He was appointed by Gov. Ella T. Grasso to the Citizen's Advisory Committee on Income Maintenance and served in that capacity from 1979 to 1992. He was elected a corporator at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in 1977. He was instrumental in obtaining funding for the building of Mystic River Homes elderly housing and served as chairman of the Board of Directors of Mystic River Home Inc. for many years.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Union Baptist Church, High Street, Mystic. Interment will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
