Boston: Reverend Father Laurier Jean-Marie Martineau age 77, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Regina Cleri in Boston. Born in Salem on March 24, 1933, he was the son of the late Henry and Irene (Marquis) Martineau.
Second oldest of 12 children, he was blessed with parents of great faith. He was taught early that “What is worth doing is worth doing well.” Devoted to his family and siblings, his motto was ‘Availability’.
He graduated from St. Joseph Elementary School and the College L’Assomption in Montreal, P.Q. He attended St. John Seminary and was ordained by Richard Cardinal Cushing on February 2, 1959.
During his years in the priesthood he has served in the following parishes: Sacred Heart in Brockton from 1959-1965, St. Jean L’Evangeliste in Newton from 1965-1969, St. Mary’s in Marlboro from 1969-1970, St. Joseph in Waltham from 1970-1982, Pastor of St. Jean-Baptiste in Lynn from 1982-1992, St. John’s in Winthrop from 1992-1996, Pastor of St. Mary’s in Marlboro from 1996-2004. He also served as Chaplain in the National Guard from 1965 -1970 and Chaplain of the Brockton Fire Department from 1962-1965. Father Larry, retired to Carmel Terrace in Framingham in 2004 and moved to Regina Cleri in Boston in December of 2009.
He leaves 5 brothers: Henry and Lucille of Clifton, NJ, Maurice, Bernard and Ginette, Jean-Guy and Marianne, Jean-Claude and Isabelle all of Salem, 4 sisters: Sister Irene, SASV of Dracut, Jeannine and Arthur Francis of Salem, Annette O’Brien of Wellesley and Marie-Therese and Thomas Brien of Billerica. He is also survived by 30 nieces and nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews and friends, including his adopted family, James and Louise Tantillo of Brockton. He was predeceased by 2 brother, Joseph and Richard Martineau.
Visiting hours: Friday, April 9, 2010 in Ste. Anne Church, 290 Jefferson Ave., Salem from 2 to 7 p.m. His Funeral Mass will follow on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
