Obituary

Maurice "Mickey" Garr, 80, of New Bedford died April 4, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in St. Louis, the son of the late Ellowee (Hicks) Phillips and James J. Garr, Sr., he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Garr was formerly employed as a chef at Beck's Seafood and the Sail Loft and was a maintenance man at Melville Towers. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years.
He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 and the Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7, a member of the 20th Century Club and a former member of the William Carney Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Andrea Garr-Barnes and her husband Haywood and Michele M. Garr, all of New Bedford, and Dolores Garr and her companion Shadrick Lowe of Stone Mountain, GA; 7 brothers and sisters, Rita Joyce Garr Robinson, Kenneth James "Doc" Garr, Edith Jannice "Niecey" Garr Russell and Norman Joseph Garr, all of Columbia, MO, Phyllis Jean Garr Kelley of Inglewood, CA; 4 grandchildren, Haywood Barnes, III, Maurice Garr Barnes, Ethan Smart Barnes and Alexis Jade Garr; 2 great-granddaughters, 4 godchildren, Jesse, Butch, Christie and Maria; his former wife, Millicent L. (Gibbs) Garr of New Bedford; his longtime companion, Natalie Seales of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James J. Garr, Jr., Michael Junice Garr and Cassier Jeffrey Garr.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 9th at 9 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours Thursday, April 8th from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford.
