Obituary

Francisco L. "Fudgie" Santos, Jr., 76, of New Bedford died October 16, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Theresa "Penny" (Gomes) Santos and son of the late Francisco and Maria E. (Lacerda) Santos.

Mr. Santos was born in New Bedford and lived in New Bedford most of his life.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and a member of the Holy Name Society.

Mr. Santos was formerly employed by New Bedford Gas and Light Company as a supervisor for many years until his retirement. He previously worked for Con Edison in New York.He received his Associates Degree from Bristol Community College in 1972 and attended the Henry George School of Social Science.

Mr. Santos was a member of the AFL-CIO Union, NAACP, Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association and the Merchant Mariners Social Club.He served in the Merchant Mariners during World War II and later served in the US Army during the Korean War receiving a sharpshooter certificate.

He enjoyed being involved in Michael Dukakis' campaign for governor and Joseph McIntyre's campaigns. He was selected as a delegate for the Massachusetts Democratic Convention.

Mr. Santos was appointed by Mayor John Markey to be a member of the Bicentennial Commission.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amelia M. Moore of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Edalina Sylvia, Deonilda Rosa, and her husband Al, and Stephanie Correia, and her husband Walter, all of New Bedford; 2 brothers-in-law, Peter Gomes of New Bedford and Manuel Gomes of New York; 2 sisters-in-law, Julia Soares and Emma Gomes, both of New Bedford; a grandson, Bryce Moore; several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Luiz "Popsicle" Santos and Alice Santos.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday, October 20th at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Sunday, October 19th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.
