Mr. Francis R. Mahoney, age 78, Of Woburn, formerly of Cambridge, died unexpectedly in Florida, March 31, 2010. Born and raised in Cambridge, Frank has been a Woburn resident for the last 50 years. He was the beloved son of the late Katherine (Dwyer) Mahoney & Matthew J. Mahoney Sr.
Frank was a graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, class of 1949 and Boston State College in 1974, with a degree in criminal justice. After graduating high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served honorable from Nov. 1950 to August 1954, during the Korean War. Soon after his discharge, Francis joined the Massachusetts State Police, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1975.
From 1975 to the mid 1990's, Frank worked for the Boston branch of the Department of Labor. From there he went on to work security at the John Joseph Moakley Federal Courthouse, also in Boston.
Frank was a member of the Arlington Knights of Columbus #109, Arlington Retired Men's Club and the Former Massachusetts State Trooper Association.
Frank and his beloved wife Nancy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008. Frank loved life and always wanted to make people happy. His family was very special to him.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Beth Ferry, his brothers, Matthew J. "James" Mahoney Jr., Paul Mahoney and John Mahoney.
He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy K. (Joyce) Mahoney. Devoted father of Dennis Mahoney of Haverhill, Joanne Magee and her husband Paul of Burlington, Nancy Norman of Nashville, TN, Robert Mahoney, his wife Amy and Steven Mahoney, all of Woburn. Loving grandfather of Michael and Shawn Mahoney, Eric and Nicole Magee, Gunnar K. Eng, Lilly, Robert Jr., and Matthew Mahoney, David and Rebecca Ferry. Dear brother of Margaret Morrison of Watertown, Maureen Morrison of NH, and Kathleen Philpott of Waltham.
Funeral from the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Tuesday, April 6th at 10 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd. Woburn at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4 thru 8.
Services will conclude with burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
