GLOUCESTER: Lawrence “Larry” Scola, 70, of 33 Maplewood Avenue died Thursday morning, March 25, 2010 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital following an extended illness. He was the husband of Phyllis F. (Aiello) Scola.
Born in Gloucester on June 20, 1939, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Pauline (Testaverde) Scola. He was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1958, where he was a member of the Fighting Fisherman football team which went to the Orange Bowl in Florida.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was inducted in November of 1959 and served as a military policeman until being honorably discharged in February of 1962.
Larry worked with his hands throughout his life. Known as extremely strong and one of the hardest working men in the city, he was employed in the construction field for many years. No job was too difficult for him.
He had been employed by the City of Gloucester Department of Public Works until his retirement. He was a former member of the St. Peter’s Club.
In addition to his wife of twenty-eight years, he is survived by his children, Aaron Scola and Cindi, wife of Edward Collins, his stepchildren, Paul, husband of Bethany Nasser and Helen, wife of John Graves, nine grandchildren, Justin Gauthier, Tarryn Begin, Jared Scola, Aislinn Scola, Amanda, Nicholas and Jennifer Nasser, Lisa and Paul Graves. He also leaves his siblings, Catherine, wife of Bob Cavanaugh, Rose Misuraca, Joseph, husband of Lia Scola, John, husband of Kathleen Scola, Phyllis, wife of Thomas Misuraca, Pauline, wife of Leo Linquata, Paul, husband of Maureen Scola, his mother-in-law, Antoinette Aiello, brothers-in-law, Joseph, husband of Helen Aiello, Lawrence Hall and sisters-in-law, Linda Scola and Debbie Aiello, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by brother, Peter Scola, sister, Marianne Jones, father-in-law, Paul Aiello, sister-in-law, Grace Hall and brothers-in-law, Charles Whynott, Joseph Misuraca, Alerio Aiello and his very good friend, Austin Connors.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory the Addison Gilbert Hospital, S.A.U., 298 Washington St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea.
