Obituary

Beatrice (Averill) Long, 81, of Mattapoisett passed away on Monday March 22, 2010 at Tobey Hospital after a long battle with pulmonary disease. She was the wife of the late Marvin W. Long, who passed away in 1995.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Howland and Lillian (Maybour) Averill, she moved to Mattapoisett in 1934. She graduated from Mattapoisett Center School and Fairhaven High School.

In 1960, she moved to Delaware Water Gap, PA, and became associated with the Fred Waring Organization, remaining there for 40 years. It was in Pennsylvania where she met and married Marvin Long, a member of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. While with the organization, she worked for the Fred Waring Music Workshop, was reservation manager of Fred Waring's Shawnee Inn, and was assistant to the vice-president of Fred Waring's Shawnee Press.

Upon retiring in 2000, she moved back to Mattapoisett to live with her sister, Dorothy Couet, who survives. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was the sister of the late Richard E. Averill who died in 1997.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her graveside service on Thursday April 22, 2010 at 11 AM at Cushing Cemetery, Mattapoisett.
