Obituary

THOMPSON – Barbara J. (Peterson) Hasenberg, 79, of the North Grosvenordale section of Thompson, died Thursday, March 18, in UMass/Memorial Health Care, Worcester. Her husband of 17 years, Joseph W. Hasenberg, died in 1996.

She leaves 2 sons, William J. Johnson and his wife Nancy of Stuart, FL and David C. Johnson and his wife Cynthia of Webster, MA; a brother, Wallace Peterson and his wife Anita of Danielson; 2 sisters, Phyllis E. Willett of Quinebaug and Anne M. Bayer of North Grosvenordale; 4 grandchildren, Cheri, John, Andrea and Jason; 4 stepsons; 2 stepdaughters; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Steven F. Johnson in 1986 and by her brother William Peterson in 2009.

She was born in Brockton, MA, the daughter of Frank E. and Jessie K. (Hefler) Peterson, and lived in North Grosvenordale for over 60 years. She graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in 1948.

Barbara was an assembler at Sandlerette Shoe Company and then at B & W Footwear, both in Webster, MA until she retired. In her younger years, she was a telephone operator.

She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Webster for many years, and after its closing became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oxford. She enjoyed reading and watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the University of Connecticut women’s basketball games. She was fond of cats.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 30, at 10:00 AM in East Thompson Cemetery, Thompson. There are no calling hours. Donations in her name may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 70 South Main St., Oxford, MA 01540.
