Obituary

Sister Marietta (Gisele) Laporte age 84, a Sister of Mercy for 66 years, died Thursday October 9, 2003 at the Parkland Medical Center, Derry, NH after a brief illness. She was born in St. Bonaventure, Canada, but grew up in Claremont, NH. She was the daughter of Wilfred & Evelina (Forest) Laporte.

Sister Marietta received her B.A. and M.A degrees in education from Mount Saint Mary College in Hooksett, NH. For more than 50 years she was a dedicated elementary school teacher in New Hampshire Catholic Schools. She taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and St. Joseph Schools in Manchester, NH; Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Schools in Nashua, NH; Holy Trinity School in Somersworth, NH; St. Peter School in Concord, NH; St. John School in Laconia, NH; and Sacred Heart School in Lebanon, NH. Sister Marietta was also a principal at St. Patrick/Hillcrest Parochial School in Manchester, NH. She taught for 15 years at St. Mary School in Claremont, NH.

After retiring from full time teaching, Sister Marietta continued to live in Claremont and tutored children in the Foster Grandparent Program of Crotched Mountain. She also served in St. Mary Parish as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector, and visited sick members of the parish. For many years she was a spiritual advisor to the St. Anne Society. In 1999 she moved to the Warde Health Center in Windham, NH. She volunteered as a tutor at the Mary Fisk School in Salem until 2000.

Family members include a sister, Anita Hudson of Hanover, NH, Several Nieces & Nephews, Grandnieces and Grandnephews, ad cousins.

Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, NH on Sunday October 19 from 4-7 PM. A prayer service will be held at 7 PM in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel at the Warde Health Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday October 20, 2003 at 11 AM. Monsignor Donald Gilbert, Sister Marietta’s nephew will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, NH.
