Robert W. Smith of Salem, NH passed away unexpectedly Thursday March 11, 2010 at Tufts Medical Center, Boston. Robert was born in Lawrence and attended Lawrence schools. He graduated from college with a degree in nursing and served with The US Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Flight Nurse with the rank of 1st Lieutenant . Following retirement, he went on to work for many years as a nursing supervisor for The VA hospital in Orange, NJ. He earned a promotion to captain in The Air Force Reserves in 1972. He returned to Salem in 2004. He loved to garden and take frequent trips to Atlantic City for fun and visits with his many friends in New Jersey. His passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Robert was pre-deceased by his parents, Phillip F. and Margaret M. Smith. He leaves his sister, Elaine Napoli of Salem, NH and brother-in-law, George Napoli of N. Andover, brothers, Phillip and his wife, Georgette Smith of Salem, NH, Leonard and his wife, Irene Smith of Methuen and Charles Smith of Lawrence. He also leaves 20 nieces and nephews and 23 great nieces and great nephews and 1 great great nephew.
Calling hours will be on Thursday March 18, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. Funeral services will be on Friday March 19 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. The burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen.
