Obituary

Julia W. (Wyzga) Roszkiewicz, 85, of New Bedford, passed away suddenly and peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital with her children at her side. Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she was preceded in passing by her loving husband Henry and son Alan.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Julie was the daughter of Stanley and Marya (Marnick) Wyzga. A graduate of New Bedford High School, she and Henry were married in 1946, upon his return from active duty in the U.S. Navy. She worked at Fernandes Supermarkets for many years while raising three children. She was a generous volunteer for many organizations, including The Friends of Poland and the Polish and American World War Veterans’ Auxiliary, and was a communicant of St. Casimir’s Church for over 50 years. In 1994, she and her husband received the Meritorious Service Award from the Friends of Poland.

Just one week ago, Julie was celebrated at an 85th birthday party organized by her children, grandchildren and others in her devoted extended family. In recent years, “Babci,” as she was known to her grandchildren, hosted an annual pierogi-making day, during which three generations made pierogies according to her instructions. She was at her happiest whenever her family and many friends were around her.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Gordon; daughter and son-in-law Mimi and John Letourneau; son Dana Roszkiewicz and his wife, Peggy Melozzi; grandchildren Jack, Susan, Joseph and Daniel Letourneau; and many nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Donations may be made to The Friends of Poland, P.O. Box 50277, New Bedford, MA 02745.
