Obituary

Phyllis E. (Oliver) Smiegal 74 years old, of Brockton died Tuesday March 9, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was the loving and devoted wife of Paul A. Smiegal for 50 years. Phyllis was born in Brockton a daughter of the late Philip and Alice (Monaghan) Oliver and was raised by her late aunt Molly Moran after her mother’s death. She remained a lifelong resident of the city and was a 1953 graduate of Brockton High School and also graduated from Chandler Business School in Boston. Before the birth of her son she worked at the Plymouth County Extension Service. Phyllis retired in 1995 from the Brockton School Department after serving 27 years as a secretary and administrative assistant.
In her free time Phyllis enjoyed working in her yard, cooking and travel. She had been a member since 1953 of “The Club”, a group of 11 friends from high school. Most importantly, Phyllis enjoyed her time spent with her family and grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her loving son Paul C. Smiegal and his wife Cynthia of Clinton, NY. She was the devoted grandmother of Will, Caroline and Julia Smiegal. She was the sister of Donald W. Oliver of Bridgton, Maine and sister-in-law of Joan Cardoza of Milton and the late George Cardoza. Phyllis leaves her special cousin Michael Moran of New Canaan, CT and his children Jack and Brian Moran and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Friday at 8 am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9 am. Burial in Melrose Cemetery.
